Following the Ketogenic Diet with a Hawaiian Palate

Last-Minute Score: Blackberries and Avocados

So with my newly (or not-so-newly) calibrated taste buds, I’ve been really pleased that I find things like blackberries and avocados just how they are. I used to think blackberries were too sour and that avocados without sugar were just ech. That said, it’s been sucky to have to go to the Wallet Death Trap of Doom that is Costco to get blackberries at a reasonable cost. It’s either Costco or signing away your first-born or next-born child to Safeway.

But then I went to Whole Foods today, just by chance. I can’t even remember what I originally went for, but I forgot to check the sales flyer online. As soon as I walked in I saw:

Blackberries 2 for $5

Oh, heck yeah! And then right next to that, a bag of avocados for $3.99.

Blackberries and Avocados

I found out later that the sale ends today, so woohoo! And if you live near a Whole Foods and are reading this on May 1, still get time!

I’m still on keto, but I’ve been thinking more and more about shifting between paleo and ketogenic depending on what our trees are giving. We have two mango and two avocado trees, and right now our pirie tree is just about ready while the avocado trees are still only in the just-flowered phase. It’s killing me to think about going an entire mango season only able to eat one during a carb-up night, especially since when it gets going, I can’t even cut and freeze them fast enough because it takes too much time.

Seriously, you try cutting up a dozen mangoes a day. It gets old really fast. And that’s taking into account giving away fruit. I definitely won’t do it if I can’t eat any of them.

I have a paleo cookbook I bought on a whim at Barnes, so I’ll look into it and see what I think. I know I’m going to stay low carb no matter what, so I’m hoping I can switch fairly easily by season.
